Get a random letter of the alphabet in one click. Choose uppercase or lowercase, limit it to vowels or consonants, or leave out letters that are hard to play with in word games, like Q, X and Z.
How to use it
- Press Generate a letter or the spacebar.
- Under Options, set how many letters you need (with “No duplicates”, up to 26).
- Choose the case, vowels or consonants, and any letters to leave out.
- Press Wheel for a spinning alphabet wheel.
Games and activities
- Scattergories and “Stop the Bus”: tick “Skip hard letters” so every round is playable.
- Alphabet games for kids: name an animal, food or country that starts with the letter.
- Phonics practice: generate vowels only or consonants only.
- Word puzzles and Wordle-style starts: generate five letters with no repeats and make a word.
- Random initials: generate two letters for character or team names.
Keep, copy and share your letters
Every result has a lock button. Locked results stay put when you generate again, so you can keep the letters you like and reroll the rest. The history panel keeps your earlier results, and the back arrow takes you to the previous set if you generated one time too many. Press Wheel to put the current results on a spinning wheel and pick one with a bit of drama.
Use Copy to copy the results as a plain list, CSV or JSON, or download them as a file. Share copies a link that shows exactly the same results to whoever opens it, which is handy for games, classes and group chats.
Tips for fair letter games
In most word games some letters are much harder than others. Very few English words start with X or Z, so a round on those letters can stall. Tick “Skip hard letters” to leave out Q, X, Z, J, K and V, or type your own list into “Leave out these letters” if your group has different rules. To stop the same letter coming up twice in a game, turn on “Exclude already shown”. The generator then works through the alphabet without repeats until every letter has been used, and then starts again.
How the randomness works
Every result comes from your browser’s built-in cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues). We use rejection sampling, so every item has exactly the same chance of being picked, with no bias toward the start or end of the list. Nothing is sent to a server, and share links store the exact results so the person you send them to sees the same thing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I generate several random letters at once?
Yes, up to 26 different letters with "No duplicates" on, or up to 100 with repeats allowed.
How do I leave out certain letters?
Type them into "Leave out these letters", for example QXZ. They will never be picked.
Can I get lowercase letters?
Yes. Choose Lowercase or Mixed under Letter case.
Does it include letters from other alphabets?
Not yet. It uses the 26 letters of the English alphabet.
Can I stop letters from repeating during a game?
Yes. Turn on "Exclude already shown" under Options. Each letter is used once until the whole set has come up, then it starts over.
Is there a letter wheel?
